What Changed: PMax Asset A/B Testing Is Now GA

For most of its existence, Performance Max has been a creative black box. One thing to know: the experiment runs at the campaign level, meaning your overall campaign budget funds both variants. If your campaign is spending less than $100/day, the test will take longer to reach significance. For DTC brands spending $500/day or more on PMax, you should have enough volume to get a readable result in three to four weeks.

Should DTC Brands Prioritize This Now?

If you're running PMax and your creative strategy is based mainly on gut feel or asset ratings — yes, this should move up your priority list. The asset rating system in PMax is notoriously unreliable as a proxy for actual conversion performance. A controlled experiment cuts through that noise.

The highest-value test to run first: if you've been debating whether to invest in video creative for PMax, this is how you get a real answer. Set up an asset group with your existing static images and one with your best video, run it for four weeks, and let the conversion data speak. That's a test worth running regardless of account size.

If you're spending under $200/day on PMax, the test runtime required to get significance is long enough that it may not be worth it yet. Focus on creative volume and feed quality first — both have faster payback at lower spend levels.
